Dogstar looked down at Scarstar's... no, his Clan, and he sighed. He wanted Scarstar to be alive. Looking around, he called out, "Cats of WindClan, as your new leader, I would like to thank you all for helping out in our darkest of days, for these are sad times." He looked down at his Clan. Firekit, sitting at the edge of the nursery entrance, returned his glance with sky-blue eyes. Skyfeather looked up at Dogstar. Her blue eyes dazzled. Brambletalon watched the new leader with thoughtful a turquoise gaze. Spottedpath sat up from her grieving, hunched position, and peered up at Dogstar, green eyes filled with sorrow.

"Spottedpath," Dogstar called down to the medicine cat, "Has StarClan told you what we can do to kill the dogs that took Scarstar's last life?" Hawkclaw hissed at the word "dog". It was a pack of hounds that hurt his mate, and now she lived in the elder's den. Firekit  looked on sadly with round eyes. No-nose, lying in the medicine cat's den, sighed with pain. The whole Clan seemed to fall silent at the mention of dogs.

Spottedpath straightened her shoulders and looked up at brown tom solemnly. "No, Dogstar. But I will let you know when - or if - they do." Dogstar nodded at Spottedpath and looked up at the sky. Why had StarClan turned their backs to them at their darkest hour? He sighed and turned back the the medicine cat. "How is No-nose?"

Hawkclaw hissed at the name. "Why do you call her that, Dogstar? 'No-nose'. Her real name is Flamestail!" Firekit watched from across the clearing, waiting nervously for a fight to break out.

Spottedpath flicked her tail at Hawkclaw, signaling him to calm down. "Flamestail is fine," the Abyssinian she-cat replied, pointedly using the elder's old name. "Aside from her nose, she recovered quickly. However..." She trailed off and gulped. "I'm afraid, if she cannot smell, she cannot return to the warriors den."

Hawkclaw jumped up and spat at her. "What do you know, Spottedpath? You're not a warrior."

"Calm down, Hawkclaw." Dogstar said. "She is your medicine cat, she walks with StarClan, and she knows what she is doing." He fixed them both with a yellow-eyed stare and then turned to Spottedpath again. "Is there anything we can do for her, so she can stay a warrior? Like that one cat that was in ThunderClan... Oh, I can't remember her name, but she only had one eye."

"Brightheart," Spottedpath replied, casting a wary glance at Hawkclaw. "Her name was Brightheart. Her mate, Cloudtail, trained her to fight and hunt. But I'm not sure how that could work, if a cat couldn't smell. Granted," she added to Hawkclaw, "she could be trained to fight. No scent is needed for that. But she won't be able to hunt again."

Hawkclaw swished his tail and turned his amber ears to the medicine cat's den. "Then can I train Flamestail, Dogstar? Please?"

Dogstar looked at the warrior and nodded. "You can train her, but not now. She needs sleep." He looked around at the assembled cats and meowed, "As for my deputy, I will wait until StarClan shows me or Spottedpath a sign."

"Dogstar, a new deputy needs to be chosen before moonhigh." Spottedpath gently reminded him. "And medicine cats aren't allowed to choose. But I'll let you know if StarClan tells me anything." The medicine cat raised her head to gaze at Silverpelt, just beginning to appear as the sun slowly set. Dogstar raised his eyes to the stars as well. Who will help me? he thought. Who will be my deputy? Just then, he swore he saw a glimmer across the night sky. Peering up into the blackness, he spotted a constellation he'd never seen before. A... Panda? It was a sign, he felt it.

Returning his gaze back to his Clan, Dogstar took a deep breath. "I have picked my deputy, and I say these words before of StarClan, so they may hear and approve my choice. The new deputy will be Pandaheart."

Spottedpath turned and looked back at Pandaheart. The new deputy was sitting up straight in pride, eyes shining. The medicine cat smiled and joined the voices calling Pandaheart's name. "Pandaheart! Pandaheart!"

"Pandaheart! Pandaheart!" Brambletalon called with everyone else. Hawkclaw was the only one silent. He wanted to be deputy, and as he glared at Pandaheart, he growled silently in his head. My time will come, even if I have to kill Pandaheart.

Dogstar smiled and lifted his striped tail for silence. "It is time for new apprentices to be made." He beckoned Firekit, Graykit and Stripekit forward with his tail. "These kits are 6 moons old, and they will become apprentices. Firekit, until you get your warrior name you will be Firepaw." He looked at his new deputy and meowed, "It is time to take a new apprentice." As she touched noses with Pandaheart, Firepaw smiled. At last, she had become an apprentice!

Dogstar turned to Graykit and said, "Graykit, until you get your warrior name you will be known as Graypaw." He looked around and meowed, "Hawkclaw, it time you take on an apprentice." Hawkclaw narrowed his eyes at his apprentice. Graypaw was so small...

As the last kit stood before him, Dogstar mewed, "Stripekit, until you get your warrior name, you will be known as Stripepaw, and because we are low on warriors, I will take this apprentice as my own."

"Firepaw! Graypaw! Stripepaw!" Spottedpath called. She looked at the three new apprentices, their eyes shining with excitement. She glanced over at Hawkclaw and frowned. The brown tom's cold eyes were fixed on Pandaheart. She wondered what was going through the senior warrior's mind. Spottedpath shrugged off the feeling of doubt. This was a moment to celebrate, not to point paws at cats. She purred as the apprentices chased each other playfully. Firepaw stopped in the center of the clearing and smiled at everyone. Stripekit shyly pawed at the ground, but the excitement was obvious in the new apprentice's eyes.

Hawkclaw sighed. "Graypaw, come with me." he said, and he walked out of camp with the young tom at his heels. Dogstar sighed inwardly, faking a smile as he watched his brother leave.

Spottedpath grinned and closed her eyes. The wind rushed against her fur, bringing the  scents of heather and night. She sighed. If only Clan life could always be this perfect. But nothing is perfect, Spottedpath thought to herself. Not even tonight. Hawkclaw's brawl with Dogstar had worried the she-cat. Now, more than ever, was the time to be united, not fighting amongst themselves...
